Thank you Steak & Cake records for raising $1,000 to benefit the foundation’s “Let the Band Play On” Campaign. The funds raised will help fund the replacement of musical instruments in the Buffalo Public Schools.

Teachers!

Do you have an idea but need funding to make your dream project a reality?

Teacher Mini-Grants provide funds to teachers to develop and implement instructional projects that motivate and challenge students to learn. Proposals should be unique classroom projects that enliven and enrich the curriculum.

Through a very simple application process, K-12 teachers can apply for grant funding to provide enriching academic experiences in their classrooms.

Typical grant awards range from $50— $150. Requests larger than $150 will not be funded.

Every school in the District will be awarded a minimum of two grants or the equivalent of $300 in funding.

Grant applications are due by November 30, 2011.

Evaluation Criteria

When developing proposals, please address the following criteria, which the judges will use to review applications.

Purpose/Objectives of the Project: Why is the grant needed? How will it affect students?
Program Description and Activities: Are the project activities related to project objectives?
Program Evaluation: Are the plans for evaluating the project realistic and measurable?
Budget: Is it reasonable and sufficiently detailed?
Overall Assessment: Does the project meet a special, specific needs?
Is it a novel or creative approach to learning?
Will it engage the students and stimulate their desire to learn?

McKinley High School Mural Dedication

Eleven Students from the Buffalo Public Schools were afforded the opportunity to learn from a nationally recognized muralist, Agustina Droze. A 210-foot-long mural that pays homage to Frederick Law Olmsted is now adorning a once graffiti-scarred retaining wall behind McKinleyHigh School.

The Buffalo Public Schools Foundation was proud to provide a grant to fund a teacher to work with Ms. Droze to oversee the project and assist in educating our students in the art of murals and its process.

During the mural’s dedication ceremony on July 27th, younger students participating in summer art camp, learned a about the mural process by creating their own mural.

Foundation Funds Student’s Study Trip to China

The Buffalo Public Schools Foundation and the Confucius Institute at the University at Buffalo have agreed to co-sponsor the second annual China study tour for 13 Buffalo Public School students —5 from daVinci, 4 from McKinley and 4 from Olmsted—and two teacher chaperones.

The group will depart for Beijing on July 15, 2011 and return to the United States on July 31st. During their stay, the group will visit Beijing and the Shaanxi Province.

The camp aims to promote exchange between the youth of China and the United States. During the program, the students will study Chinese language and culture, participate in various sports and cultural activities and visit points of interest and sites of natural beauty in China.

City Honors ranked 9th in U.S.

Buffalo’s City Honors School is the ninth-best high school in America, according to rankings released Friday by the Washington Post.

The Post rated more than 1,900 schools, based on their ratios of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and other college-level tests, compared to the number of graduating seniors.

Dallas schools hold the top two spots on the list. The Science and Engineering School is No. 1, and the Talented and Gifted School is No. 2.

City Honors is the only New York school in the top 15. New York City’s New Explorations School is 16th.

Students Return From China

Through a project funded by the Buffalo Public Schools Foundation and in conjunction with the University at Buffalo’s Confucius Institute, 15 students and 2 teachers from the Buffalo Public Schools traveled to China and had the experience of a lifetime. This program was designed to promote deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture, provide students enrolled in Mandarin Chinese classes the opportunity to develop proficiency with the language and encourage motivated students to pursue Asian studies and international coursework at the collegiate level.

Middle School Music Camp – August 9 – August 13, 2010

Students currently in grades 5 – 8 who are involved in Choral and/or Instrumental Music Programs in BPS participated in the Middle School Music Camp funded by the Buffalo Public Schools Foundation. The Middle School Music Camp provided advanced instruction to music students. The Program included both large and small group instruction specific to each student’s instrument or vocal range as well as instruction in Music Theory.

Art Interview and Portfolio Prep Camp

Buffalo Public Schools’ High School Sophomore and Junior students participated in an Art Portfolio and Interview Prep Camp funded by the Buffalo Public Schools Foundaiton. In the camp students worked on creating and compiling strong artwork that would meet, and hopefully exceed, the portfolio review guidelines put forth by various higher education institutions. Students were taught how to safe keep their work, label their pieces, and complete written artist statements for each portfolio piece. Mock interviews were held and students will had a chance to practice how to address questions through role-playing.
